Countries in Zone 1

Zone 1 numbers are those in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) Area. This zone covers the following countries and territories:
  • United States
  • Canada
  • American Samoa
  • Anguilla
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Bermuda
  • British Virgin Islands
  • Cayman Islands
  • Dominica
  • Dominican Republic
  • Grenada
  • Guam
  • Jamaica
  • Montserrat
  • Northern Mariana Islands
  • Puerto Rico
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Saint Lucia
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Sint Maarten
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Turks and Caicos Islands
  • United States Virgin Islands
All of the Zone 1 numbers share the same country code (+1), with the individual countries/territories being identified by the Area Code.

Number Format

The Zone 1 numbers are all 11 digits in length (including the initial country code) and are split into 4 distinct parts.

Country Code

The Country code is always 1 and is not dialed when calls are made between numbers in the zone.

Area Code

Three digits that identify the area (for the USA and Canada) or country/territory (for the other countries/territories).

Allowed ranges: [2–9] for the first digit, and [0-9] for the second and third digits. When the second and third digits of an area code are the same, that code is called an easily recognizable code (ERC). ERCs designate special services; e.g., 888 for toll-free service. The NANP is not assigning area codes with 9 as the second digit.

Exchange Code

Three digits that identify the individual exchange a number belongs to and is often treated as part of the subscriber number.

Allowed ranges: [2–9] for the first digit, and [0–9] for both the second and third digits (however, in geographic area codes the third digit of the exchange cannot be "1" if the second digit is also "1").

Subscriber Numbers

This unique four-digit number is the subscriber number of a particular telephone line.

Allowed ranges: [0–9] for each of the four digits.

Zone 1 numbers are usually written with the individual components separated by a "-", such as +1-####-###-####.
