Dominican Republic

Post by ScamNumbers »

The area codes for the Dominican Republic are 809, 829 and 849 and the country is part of the NANP.

Area code 809 was created on January 1, 1958 and initially, was used for all of the Caribbean, with the exception of Cuba, Haiti, Aruba, the Netherlands Antilles, and the French West Indies. During the 1990s, Area Code 809 was split and eventually just assigned to the Dominican Republic.

The overlay Area Codes 829 and 849 were added due to the explosive growth of cellular communication in the Dominican Republic. 829 was added in July 2005 and 849 in early 2009.

In the Dominican Republic, a local telephone number is dialed using the area code and the seven digits of the telephone number. Callers from the United States or another NANP country would prefix this with 1. Callers from outside the NANP would dial their international access code, followed by 1 and the full 10 digit number.

Scam Warning

The Dominican Republic area codes have been linked to a form of telephone fraud known as the "one ring scam". The person perpetuating the scam calls the victim via a robodialer or similar means, sometimes at odd hours of the night, then hangs up when the phone is answered with the hope that they will be curious enough to call the number back. When the victim does this, an automatic $19.95 international call fee is charged to their account, as well as $9.00/min thereafter.
