The area code for British Virgin Islands is 284 and the country is part of the NANP.

The area code was created in a split from the original area code 809 in around October 1997.

In British Virgin Islands, a local telephone number is dialed using the seven digits of the telephone number. Callers from the United States or another NANP country would dial 1 284 and the seven digit number. Callers from outside the NANP would dial their international access code, followed by 1 284 and the seven digit number.

Scam Warning

The 284 area code has been linked to a form of telephone fraud known as the "one ring scam". The person perpetuating the scam calls the victim via a robodialer or similar means, sometimes at odd hours of the night, then hangs up when the phone is answered with the hope that they will be curious enough to call the number back. When the victim does this, an automatic $19.95 international call fee is charged to their account, as well as $9.00/min thereafter.
